You can’t help but notice the recent ‘vamp-boom’ of the last few years, Twilight, True Blood and Vampire Diaries have all contributed a vast amount to this sanguinarian trend – I’ve even seen that all black, pseudo-goth fashion is coming into TopShop!

I saw an article in the latest issue of Paranormal magazine on ‘Psychic Vampires’ which led me to want to throw my own two cents into the bowl based on my experience and actually growing up in a community of people, some of whom believed themselves to be psychic or non-sanguinarius vampires!

So, what is a psychic vampire, how does it differ from a regular (sanguinarius) vampire? Simply, rather than drinking blood from a victim (or consenting adult, as the black veil advises – google it!) a psi-vamp will drink the energy from a person’s aura, direct from their chakras, or simply soaking up a smile or burst of positive emotion. (re the article’s title!)

It’s basically an easy step into the fang-club for the squeamish.

Now, for the reality of the situation; the original form of psi-vamp came to be in the medieval ages, the Christian church happily pushed the thought of a ‘demon’ which fed on the soul of the living and attached sexuality to the beasts, calling them Incubi and Sucubi. (male and female forms) Whoever had a sexual dream was said to have been visited by one of these entities. They fed on the sexual energy of a victim.

This thought then evolved further into a demon which simply fed upon the energy of a victim, if someone back then began to feel overly tired, lethargic or dizzy regularly, the only explanation in those times to these ailments was that some kind of parasitic spirit which had begun feeding on said victim. These days, we’d most likely diagnose the person as having ME, stress or an iron deficiency!

The myth of these creatures carried on through the years however, taking several forms, from demons, to possessed humans, aliens and finally people who had ‘un-locked’ their psychic potential. In modern day times, psychic vampires are considerably more popular than blood drinking vampires, based on a study in 2005, 17% of vamps drink blood, whereas 31% consume energy through psychic means.

It is noted that many self-confessed (as if there was any other kind!) psychic vamps have illnesses like asthma or panic. Asthma being an illness in which the victim finds breathing difficult, often in times of mental or physical stress. An illness that’s quite psychophysiological, not to say psychosomatic, but something that is often brought on when the person feels in the position that an attack should come on.

There is no proof to say that psi-vamps do or do not exist, in my eyes, having known psi-vamps in the past and having being made victim to their powers (as an impressionable young teen!) I can put the feeling great after a feeding down to a placebo effect, and the lethargic symptoms when ‘thirsty’ to placebo’s evil twin, the nocebo effect.

Even with ‘real’ psychics, there are ways to prove or disprove powers, with psi-vamps we’ll never really know either way.

You may notice that the above image is actually taken from the film Nightwatch, I’m a big horror movie fan, and this seemed most fitting!

I was recently employed to create a fraudulent demonstration of psychic surgery for a ‘Circus of Horrors’ style show.

It was marvelous fun, so I thought it just to write up my findings here!

Let’s start at one – What is psychic surgery? Simply put, a patient would go to a psychic surgeon to be healed of whatever ailment ails them, (i.e. cancer or simply a headache) or to be looked at (or into) and any breaks or tears in their ‘aura’ located.

Ze Arigo (born  was a peasant in Brazil, who became one of the most famous psychic surgeons of all time. In 1955 as Arigo was a young adult, he began seeing visions of a man dressed in surgical gear and his sleep was disturbed by the sound of a mysterious voice.

This ghost surgeon introduced himself to Arigo as Dr. Fritz, a surgeon who had died in the first world war. So Arigo’s career began as a psychic surgeon, he never claimed that he was the doctor, only performing under direction of Fritz. Arigo saw up to 1,500 patients a day, he never took a fee from his patients. Apparently no one died or experienced a worsening of their condition after seeing Arigo.

The typical treatment from a psychic surgeon would involve them massaging your skin, usually the stomach if lying down, and creating a painless incision with their finger tips.

From this incision, blood would pour and bits of ‘bad flesh’ would be taken out, the incision would then be healed and the blood wiped away. Voila, you’re healed!

In reality, it has been found that this is merely a sleight of hand trick and a placebo effect.

Naturally, there are still cases around the world that have not been de-bunked, perhaps these powers really do exist, but I don’t know how Copperfield’s flying illusion works either.

As I’m sure you’re aware, I left this blog approximately one year ago. Now, it’s finally the time to re-open the book and start writing once more!

Not completely 100% on topic, however, I felt it warranted inclusion as it’s so incredibly cool and probably the closest that most normal people will get to real PK!

The above picture shows Emotiv Systems new development, a $300 headset with 14 sensors about it’s body to utilize neurological signals to affect gameplay during video games, so in essence, if you smiled, Mario could smile too while speeding around in his go-cart!

I couldn’t resist dropping in that image – Classic film, anyone that knows me personally recognizes my love for horror movies!

So, onto the subject in hand, I found myself reading an interesting article today on poltergeists, the full article can be found here:

It details widely accepted thoughts on poltergeist activity, (A poltergeist being a ghost of sorts which makes noise, moves things, etc) that it was always thought to be caused by supernatural presence, before a trend of psychokinetic activity took over, the poltergeist activity began to be attributed to troubled teens, ex-disney stars and whatnot.

It’s interesting that it doesn’t even mention the thought of fraudulent claims… In my experiences and in the experiences of paranormal investigator friends, 99/100 of any claim in any way relating to poltergeist activity isn’t anything supernatural, it’s more likely to be a sneaky breeze knocking the plates from the wall than an angst fueled teen brain emitting bizarre frequencies… I’ll finish on an old-style chinese proverb:

Above is a link to an interesting video, it looks aged and quite legit, I can’t understand a single word as I’ve yet to master fluent Japanese, but it seems obvious enough what’s going on!

Project Alpha was a HOAX concocted by James Randi, which was to take place between 1979 and 1983.

The goal? To fool the scientists.

Randi believed that many parapsychologists were biased, that they wanted to find the real deal. So, enter Steve Shaw (aka Banachek) and Mike Edwards. These were two young guys, 18 and 17 respectively who were magicians – Randi recognised their talent and trained them further to be metal bending wizkids!

Throughout the 4 years the two were tested, under strict conditions, they continued to fool the scientists to the point that they tightened up procedures and suddenly the testee’s (calm down) lost their power, shortly after at a press conference ‘coming out’ as cheaters!

I’m sure you can find a lot more information on Alpha with a quick google search, a truly impressive HOAX!
